The Moon Knight ending left us with a few questions. Even though we know where Oscar Isaac’s Marc Spector / Steven Grant ends, a post-credits scene has left us wondering about the duo’s future.
The last time we saw them in episode 5, they were in the afterlife, along with the hippo god Taweret. Ethan Hawke’s Arthur Harrow, meanwhile, was on the verge of freeing Ammit, while Khonshu remained imprisoned.
What did the Moon Knight ending mean? Which sequences were dreams and which realities? We break down each twist of the finale to explain exactly what happened and answer every single one of your burning questions.
Moon Knight ending explained
Moon Knight’s ending was action-packed and even took the time to introduce two new characters.
A big problem arises when Arthur Harrow finally manages to free the Egyptian god Ammit from his captivity. Marc Spector and Steven Grant are still stuck in the afterlife, but Layla El-Faouly is on the scene and tracking Harrow. Taweret tells her to free Khonshu and lets her know that Marc and Steven are trying to return.
Marc, meanwhile, goes to free Steven from the sands of the Duat (which is the Egyptian afterlife). He makes a heartfelt speech to his alternative personality, but it doesn’t seem to be enough: Marc himself ends up trapped in the sand, until the doors of the world of the living open thanks to the Egyptian god Osiris. Taweret then helps the duo to come back to life.
To stop Ammit, Layla agrees to become Taweret’s avatar … but only temporarily. Layla becomes a full-fledged superhero, complete with her own winged costume. She also frees Khonshu.
The only way to stop Ammit is to imprison her in a human body, thus making her vulnerable, so Marc and Layla chase Harrow, while Khonshu battles the crocodile god. In the fight, Marc faints and, when he recovers, Harrow is nearly dead. Steven confirms that he wasn’t the one behind the attack.
Layla and Marc complete the ritual to trap Ammit and Marc convinces Khonshu to release him, which means he loses his Moon Knight powers. Then, strangely enough, Marc and Steven both end up back at the Putnam Psychiatric Hospital. But, this time, they notice that Harrow is stepping on bloody footprints and refuse to accept his diagnosis. Then they wake up in their London apartment.
In the Moon Knight post-credits scene, it is revealed that Harrow was taken to Sienkiewicz psychiatric hospital in the wake of the finale’s action. He meets Khonshu again in the back of a car and the god reveals that he still has a human avatar … Jake Lockley. Lockley then shoots Harrow to death, presumably killing Ammit as well.
Who is Jake Lockley?
In the Marvel comics, Jake Lockley is another Marc Spector personality. He drives a taxi and is connected to the criminal world through his informants. In the series, he has been hinted at earlier: at one point, both Marc and Steven passed out and had no memory of killing some mercenaries. Later, it is suggested that Jake is trapped inside a sarcophagus in the psychiatric hospital and, during another scene, he appears to be in control during a conversation with Dr. Harrow. In the finale, he finally arrives.
Is Jake Lockley Khonshu the new avatar?
In the post-credits scene, Harrow is taken from Sienkiewicz psychiatric hospital in a car containing Khonshu. But, this time, Marc isn’t with him: it’s Jake Lockley. “Why on earth would I need someone else when he has no idea how upset he really is?” Khonshu asks, before introducing Harrow to Jake.
So while Marc and Steven are done with Khonshu, he is not done with their physical form yet.
Was that post-credits sequence real or just a dream?
Moon Knight’s biggest breakthrough saw Marc wake up in Putnam Psychiatric Hospital, questioning the reality of the entire series. However, it turned out that he was part of the Egyptian afterlife, which means that Marc hadn’t really imagined the entire TV show until then.
But, in the post-credits scene, Harrow is in a psychiatric hospital, so is it a dream? It doesn’t seem like that. In fact, it’s all very real and this hospital is called Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital, named after the comic artist Bill Sienkiewicz. There is no indication that Harrow is hallucinating, and he even sees Khonshu again before meeting an untimely end at the hands of Jake Lockley.
How does Layla get superpowers?
Layla ends up becoming a full-fledged superhero in the finale, and it’s all thanks to Taweret. The god reaches out and tells Layla that Marc and Steven are trying to return from the afterlife, but Layla is reluctant to be her avatar in the fight against Ammit. She ultimately agrees, though, but only temporarily. This gives her a nice winged costume courtesy of the hippo god.
According to Marvel.com, Layla even has an official superhero name: Scarlet Scarab.
How does Steven Grant escape the sand?
In Moon Knight episode 5, Steven went overboard in the Duat during a confrontation with the unbalanced souls. He was claimed by the sands and seemed frozen forever. But, in the end, Marc rejects the paradise of Campo di Canne and returns for his other personality.
In a touching speech, Marc tells Steven, “From the moment you arrived, a long time ago … You saved me. I survived because I knew I wasn’t alone.” The doors to the living world then open just as Marc is frozen by the sands, and both personalities thaw and manage to escape from the Duat together, with the help of Taweret.
Why did Marc and Steven go back to the psychiatric hospital?
After trapping Ammit in Harrow’s body and giving up their powers, Marc and Steven wake up in Putnam again. It’s a confusing moment, but as Harrow walks away, he leaves bloody footprints behind him, which Marc and Steven both notice. They refuse to accept Harrow’s diagnosis and therefore his version of reality, and both fall backwards, waking up again in their London apartment. It seems that they have finally reconciled with each other and with everything that has happened to them, and this latter vision has seen them process everything that has happened to them.
What happens to Marc Spector / Steven Grant?
After stopping Harrow and Ammit, Marc and Steven wake up at home in London. They are both free from Khonshu’s influence, but when they stand up, that old seat belt catches them and they end up face down on the floor. Not quite a noble ending for the series … but peaceful for both of us.
What happens to Arthur Harrow and Ammit?
Throughout the series, Harrow has been trying to bring Ammit back into being and help her execute her judgments on humanity. He eventually achieves his goal of hers in Episode 6 and Ammit returns. She immediately goes on to eat souls and fight Khonshu, while Marc and Layla try to get hold of Harrow.
Then, Marc passes out and Jake Lockley is the one who defeats Harrow. Layla and Marc manage to trap Ammit inside him, but Marc refuses to kill him, despite Khonshu urging him to finish the job.
The moon god, however, finds a way around the problem and instead leads Jake Lockley to kill Harrow. With Harrow gunned down, we can assume that Ammit is also gone forever.
