Vice President Kamala Harris assaulted a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would be overturned Eggs against Wade and effectively reduce the right to abortion in the United States as a “direct assault on freedom”.
Ms. Harris made the remarks at a conference for EMILY’s List, a group that raises funds for Democratic candidates who advocate abortion rights.
“It has never been clear which party wants to push us forward and which party wants to push us back,” he said. “Those Republican leaders who are trying to arm the use of the law against women, well, let’s say, how dare they. How dare they tell a woman what she can do and what she can’t do with her body?
The vice president’s remarks came the next day Politic published a leaked draft opinion written by Associate Judge Samuel Alito for Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organizationwho said “egg he was terribly wrong from the start. ”But Mrs. Harris said so Eggs against Wadewhich enshrined constitutional protections for the treatment of abortion, “protected a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body for nearly half a century”
“In essence, Roe recognizes the fundamental right to privacy,” he said. “When the right to privacy is attacked, anyone in our country could face a future in which the government can interfere in our decisions … It has never been clearer which side wants to expand our rights and wants to limit them.”
On Monday, Ms. Harris tested negative for Covid-19 after testing positive last week, which allowed her to attend the event in person.
The speech comes as Democrats are attempting to defend their slim majority of 50 seats in the Senate and 12 in the House of Representatives.
“It has never been clear which party wants to push us forward and which party wants to push us back,” he said.
Democratic women race in competitive Senate contests in Wisconsin and North Carolina and the least competitive state of Florida. Sarah Godlewski, who EMILY’s List approved in Wisconsin, said she was in town for the event on Monday night when she learned of the leaked draft decision and she joined the protesters before the US Supreme Court.
“I was actually just coming out of the dinner where we were talking about the importance of electing pro-choice Democratic women,” said Ms. Godlewski, who serves as Wisconin’s treasurer. “And we had 50 years to codify it into law. And we had the House, the Senate, the White House and we haven’t done it yet and now we have to wait this last hour to do something. “
